I went to the drug store, bought a box (not the one above), and brought it home. My 10 year old says to me, "MOMMY!!! Are you going to relax your hair????!!!!", to which I answered , "no". She asked, "are you going to relax MINE!?", with excitement in her eyes. I shook my head no, and she just said, "ohhh", in a sad way.

My hair is growing out now, and it's at a stage where I can ALLLLLMOST braid the very back, which was shaved down to a small fraction of an inch in July. The top and sides are braidable. I wouldn't go OUT with this little funny things sticking out of my head, mind you, but I am considering a salon nearby that does comb coils. I need to do SOMETHING with it that I can keep moisturized for the Winter. I also need a trim.

Needing the trim makes my ends look dry. I hate that term....grease. No, I don't greeeeze my headdddd. LOL...I do use oils and moisturizers, etc (blog to come soon), but I steer from petroleum based products because, well, petro comes from the same stuff I put in my gas tank. That's crazy.

I know many a natural that has toyed with re-relaxing. padding-right: 10px; padding-top: 5px; width: 131px;">
Carol's Daughter wasn't one of my favorites at first. I thought it too indulgent and the results were, in my first thoughts, no greater than with using any other products. But, it really is true what people say: it takes a while for your hair to "get used to" a product before you can say whether that product is doing anything for you.

While this product does barely anything for my 3c/4a hair, my youngest daughter is 4c, with highly coily, fragile, dry hair. Boy, oh boy, does this product work wonders on her!! Healthy Hair Butter softens her hair, adds just the right amount of oil (it isn't an oily product in my opinion), and I love how it makes her hair smell. It is great to use to smooth down her edges after it's been blow dried, because a gel with revert the hair back to curly. Unstraightened, it works nicely to keep he ends moisturized, too.

The next product I've fallen for is a vitamin! Biotin. <iframe align="left" frameborder="0" marginheight="0" marginwidth="0" scrolling="no" src="http://rcm.amazon.com/e/cm?t=haimakbeaetc-20&o=1&p=8&l=bpl&asins=B0026QPS4E&fc1=000000&IS2=1&lt1=_blank&m=amazon&lc1=0000FF&bc1=000000&bg1=FFFFFF&f=ifr" style="height: 245px; "Biotin vitamins is what you need," said the doc. So off I go and bought a bottle. Not only did my big toe nails get stronger, but my fingernails did also. I've been a nail nibbler since I was a child, but look at these nails:

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; I especially love that I don't HAVE to add any heavy oils to keep my hair from feeling brittle and dried out.

No, I'm not getting paid to endorse the product, nor was I asked!! Dry. Blech.

This is my first year as a natural where I can truly identify with what I've been reading about winter dryness. My hair feels like it didn't actually come out of my head. I've gotten all snagged up in it. It's hard to keep it moisturized, and hard to keep it feeling lubricated.

My hair now mattes without a care, (as if hair had cares), and I've had to cut out a tangle or two. Yes, it has grown, but really...I can hardly appreciate the length because it shrinks worse than it did in the humidity of Summer.

I really don't like Winter. Maybe it's my attitude. I don't know. I am in search, FAST search, for an acceptable protective style. I don't want to end up looking like some over-grown, over-aged 9 year old. I don't want twists that look like I'm an escaped mental patient. I don't want braids that look like I can't let go of my high school years.

I want something update and stylish. I was thinking of Goddess Braids, because they just look so elegant.

Bigger than the whole dryness issue is that I also cannot find anyone willing to give me a decent suggestion!! Anyone that knows me really can't offer anything I can use. I usually get: "Oh, I don't know...I like the curls," despite the fact that I say the curls are winding up on my bathroom tiled floor! I will hear: "Well, why don't you just wear a wig?"

Stop the madness. If I could find a suitable wig I would have it on. Seriously, I'm frustrated!!!

I will update once my epiphany comes...or I run across a style I can't live without.

Thanks for reading!

<link rel='alternate' type='text/html' href='http://napsnall.blogspot.com/2009/12/winter-dry-blech.html' title='Winter. Yayy...they are at the end of the post**

Yesterday, it became clear to me the influence my natural hair has had on the women around me. One woman at the job said, "Lynn, I am trying very hard to copy your hair...but yours is "good" hair". To that I just rolled my eyes. Really. What kind of comment is that? It's like saying, "you are "part black". Come on.

The truth is: none of us has good or bad hair. I listened to this woman further. She told us about how her mom used to call her a nappy headed whatever. She kept referring to herself as nappy headed. I think there's nothing wrong with being nappy. She thought it meant she was less than good.

That's a damn shame. Why put a person down for what they are naturally? Back when she was coming up, to fit in, little black (coloured) girls had to fry their hair straight. That was acceptable. Nowadays, we are sewing and glueing horse tails and hair Indians and Orientals cut off of their heads into ours.

Don't get me wrong. I don't condemn a weave. I applaud my sisters for their versatility. I think if you want to chemically alter your hair into straightness, do it! You want an S-Curl...get one. You want a weave or braids all down your back, do that too! But do NOT tell me my hair is any kind of GOOD because it's curly. That was so offensive. To me, she could have just as well said, you are one nappy headed so and so. That's what that is like to me!

Anyhow...I twisted my hair. I don't have any photos, because I'm going to do it again, this time using some kind of product or butters in it. I made small twists all over. And today, I untwisted all those things...and fell in LOVE with it!! Wow...I could see where using a product or butter would have been better. It needed that. I was able to trim my ends well while it was still twisted.

I got lots of compliments on those twists. I've got hair that is about mid neck in length. Hell, who am I kidding...I've got 4 textures and at least as many lengths! But, those tiny twists held, and I loved it.

After trimming, the twistout was so pretty. I had just put some coconut oil on my fingers as I untwisted, so it looked really shiny and healthy.

I will redo it, post photos, for those who care to see.

Just needed to unload and explain. LOL....

Be blessed.
~ Miss Honey

<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_zuEC9dUVJes/SploXQdNd_I/AAAAAAAAABk/oy_ejG18gmQ/s320/HPIM0023.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5375442379007162354" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="http://1.bp.blogspot.com/_zuEC9dUVJes/SploWwBWNsI/AAAAAAAAABc/8iK2c-kQL9Q/s320/HPIM0016.JPG" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5375442370300360386" />

My Twists

My curlz
I have been 100% natural now since 2007. I've dabbled with relaxers, S-curls, braids, etc for years and years, as many women have. I've tried just about everything.
It was late 2007 when the last of my permed hair was finally gone. I had used a texturizer in 2007 because I guess I was afraid of havin hair with "nothing in it". I was still sold on the premise of changing the natural texture of my hair to fit what society dictated as being acceptable.

Hmf!!

The crown of my head was always the place relaxers did the most damage...I've been burned, scabbed, and in all sorts of pain. Consequently, this section of my hair grows very verrrrrrrrry slowwwwwwwwwwwwwwly. It is only NOW catching up with the rest of my hair. I've tried cutting the rest to give the crown a chance to catch up. I don't have to do that any more.
So, it was with great pride that I was able to finally do a two strand twist all over my head. The crown is still the shortest, but I am finally able to twist it, and it stayed, until I slept on it, but I just retwisted, and I was fine. My scalp looked good, and I tied the twists down over night. I went to work. People looked at me a little crazy, but I got a few compliments also. My silver strands that have popped out due to raising 3 girlz, even looked nice woven into the twists. I don't have a LOT, but I do have some. I've stopped coloring also...it just strips my hair, for whatever reason.

I was happy until I was leaving my mother's house after work yesterday!! Right before I left, she said, "Honey, there's something I want to tell you...please, PLEASE take them little slavery, plantation twisted up sprigs out your head!! I like that soft curly look, I don't like this look"!!

Oh. My. God.

Mom is 83 years young this year, thank-you-Jesus, and so, sometimes, we just accept whatever she says and lets it go. We know, at her age, what she feels, she will just say, however; my widdle feewings wuz hurt up! I began to question: do I really look like a fool? Have I looked a dern fool all day??"

I didn't even snap a photo of it. I was planning on doing a video blog on it, to put on my Youtube. I didn't. But, I wouldn't be totally defeated!
I put a deep conditioner on the ends of those twigs, rubbed some moisturizer in, and put on my satin hair bonnet. This morning, I washed, conditioned, rubbed on moisturizer and then some 100% Aloe Vera Gel. I am wearing my skinny headband to hold my hair up away from my face, and have small ringlets of curls all over my head.
My point?? I'm not sure I have one, but I will say this. I am grateful to be able to have the versatility to do more than one style, because nappy girls can do a lot with their heads. I will re-twist this week. In fact, I may try coils, which I haven't done as a full "napptural" yet. Better yet, Imma count up my recession money, and see if I can't just go to the natural salon and get flat twists!!

BUT, the LAST thing I'll do is a chemical.
